Are Scented Candles Harmful to Your Health? How to Use Them Safely

Scented candles have become a popular way to create a cozy, relaxing atmosphere at home. Whether you're unwinding after a long day, meditating, or setting the mood for a gathering, candles add both scent and ambiance. However, concerns have been raised about whether long-term use of scented candles could be harmful to your health. The short answer is: they can be safe, as long as you use them mindfully and in moderation.

What Are the Concerns?
Some studies have found that burning scented candles—especially those made with paraffin wax and synthetic fragrances—can release potentially harmful chemicals such as:

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): including formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and toluene, which in high concentrations may irritate the eyes, throat, and respiratory system.

Particulate Matter: fine particles that can affect air quality and contribute to respiratory issues with prolonged exposure.

Soot: when candles burn improperly, they may produce soot, which can dirty surfaces and may also carry chemicals deep into the lungs when inhaled.

How to Use Scented Candles Safely
The good news is that you don't have to give up scented candles altogether. Here are some simple tips to enjoy them without putting your health at risk:

1. Choose High-Quality, Natural Candles
Look for candles made with:

Soy wax, beeswax, or coconut wax, which burn cleaner than paraffin.

Essential oils instead of synthetic fragrances.

Cotton or wood wicks (avoid metal-core wicks, which may contain heavy metals).

These materials reduce the emission of harmful substances during burning.

2. Ventilate Your Space
Always burn candles in a well-ventilated room. Open a window slightly to allow fresh air to circulate and reduce indoor air pollution.

3. Trim the Wick
Before each use, trim the wick to 1/4 inch (about 6 mm). This helps the candle burn more cleanly and evenly, minimizing soot and smoke.

4. Limit Burning Time
Avoid burning candles for more than 1–2 hours at a time. Overuse increases the accumulation of indoor pollutants. Also, allow the room to air out afterward.

5. Avoid Burning Too Many Candles at Once
Burning several candles at once, especially in a small room, can quickly degrade air quality. One candle is usually enough for a subtle, pleasant aroma.

6. Keep Candles Away from Drafts
Drafts from open windows, fans, or air vents can cause uneven burning and increase soot production.

While the occasional use of scented candles poses little to no risk for most people, frequent and prolonged exposure—especially in poorly ventilated spaces—may have health implications over time. By choosing natural ingredients, burning candles in moderation, and ensuring proper airflow, you can continue enjoying your favorite scents without compromising your well-being.

So light your candle, take a deep breath, and relax—safely.
